Major Type 2 Study Concludes One Year Early; Shows Diet, Exercise and Medications Help Prevent Type 2
Eat a low-fat diet, take a brisk walk or ride a bike for 30 minutes a day five days a week and your risk of getting type 2 diabetes will be reduced by 58 percent. Also, taking the type 2 drug Glucophage can also cut the risk of developing type 2 by 31 percent, say researchers in the United States.
According to an August 8 news release by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), was concluded a year early because the data had clearly answered the main research questions.
The DPP, which enrolled over 3,000 people, was conducted at 27 centers nationwide. It was the first major trial to show that diet and exercise can effectively delay diabetes in a diverse American population of overweight people with impaired glucose tolerance—a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to diagnose diabetes.
"The DPP findings represent a major step toward the goal of containing and ultimately reversing the epidemic of type 2 diabetes in this country," said Allen Spiegel, MD, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), which sponsored the DPP.
