The majority of people at risk for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) - a silent killer affecting millions - do not even know it, according the National Council on the Aging (NCOA). Diabetes is one of the biggest risk factors in getting the disease, says the organization, yet results of a recent survey show that people are not aware of and are not being screened for it.
According to NCOA, the American Heart Association reports that more than 10 million people in the U.S. have PAD, a condition in which the arteries in the arms and legs become blocked due to plaque formation, which decreases blood flow and possibly leads to stroke or heart attack.
"But the good news is that PAD is easily diagnosed and is treatable," said Robert Rosenson, MD, director of the Preventive Cardiology Center at Northwestern University. "We can reduce the risk through lifestyle modifications and medical management. Simply put, early detection can save your life."
