Study Says Vitamins C and E May Treat Kidney Problems
Short-term treatment with vitamins C and E lowers the urinary albumin excretion rate (AER) in people with type 2 diabetes who have micro/macroalbuminuria, according to a team of Danish researchers. In the September 2001 issue of Diabetic Medicine, they suggest that further long-term, large-scale studies of this albuminuria-reducing treatment modality are needed.
Elevated levels of urinary albumin excretion predict a high risk of progressing to end-stage kidney disease. Thirty people with type 2 diabetes who had an AER of 30 to 300 mg per 24 hours were included in a double-blind, randomized, cross-over trial. Patients received either vitamin C in 1,250 mg doses and vitamin E in 680 IU doses per day or placebos for four weeks with a three-week washout period between treatments, in random order.
The researchers discovered that combined treatment with vitamins C and E reduced AER by 19 percent.
