Medicare Adds Foot Exams to Its Coverage for People With Diabetic

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) now includes foot exams in its coverage for Medicare recipients with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy.

This is a "major step forward," says Lee Sanders, DPM, past president of the Health Care & Education division of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and chief of podiatry at the Department of Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

"For many people with diabetes, peripheral neuropathy can lead to foot ulcers, slow healing or non-healing wounds and ultimately to lower-limb amputation," Dr. Sanders states in the ADA press release. "Foot exams will help many people with diabetes to avoid that unfortunate complication."

The new guidelines allow Medicare recipients with diabetic neuropathy to receive a foot exam every six months.
