New Book on Improving Your Insulin Pump Therapy Now Available
Whether you are a beginner or a veteran of insulin pump therapy, a new book called "Optimal Pumping: A Guide to Good Health With Diabetes" could prove to be a valuable resource.
Written by Linda "Freddi" Fredrickson, MA, RN, CDE; Richard R. Rubin, PhD, CDE; and Stefan Rubin, and published by Medtronic/MiniMed, "Optimal Pumping" offers both tips and personal stories to help pumpers or prospective pumpers improve blood-glucose control.
In a review of "Optimal Pumping," Mike Heile, MD, a family practitioner who also wears an insulin pump, wrote: "'Optimal Pumping' is a concise and easy-to-read book, designed to help people with diabetes using insulin pumps to further fine-tune their diabetes management…The authors' frequent use of real-life experiences gives it a very down-to-earth tone."
"Optimal Pumping" walks the pumper through a simple, step-by-step process for testing and fine-tuning basal rates, meal boluses and correction boluses. In addition, the book guides the reader in using the pump while exercising, traveling, varying a daily routine and enjoying special meals. It also explains how to manage sick days, stress and menstrual cycles.
Heile writes, "Although the main purpose of ‘Optimal Pumping' is to give the reader easy-to-follow advice on using the pump's advanced features for fine-tuning and normalizing his or her lifestyle, the book also serves as a great review of the basics, such as how to prevent DKA and deal with low blood glucose."
Nicole Johnson, Miss America 1999 and an insulin pumper, calls "Optimal Pumping" "a must-have for anyone on or considering an insulin pump. It is clear, concise and easy to understand."
Irl Hirsch, MD, medical director of the Diabetes Care Center at the University of Washington in Seattle, says that "Optimal Pumping" contains "a wealth of information. appropriate for beginning and advanced insulin pump users in addition to all healthcare professionals caring for 'pumpers.'"
To buy the book, which costs $12, call Medtronic/MiniMed at (800) 843-6687 or log on to the Web at minimed.com.
