Blink Reflex Might Give Clues to Nerve Damage
Turkish researchers are exploring whether blink reflex testing can be a useful method for early diagnosis of central nervous system damage in people with diabetes. Although advanced testing for diabetes-related damage to the peripheral nervous system is available, the same is not true for damage to the central nervous system.
In an article published in the October 2001 issue of Diabetes/Metabolism Research and Reviews, researchers in the Department of Neurology at Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey, suggest that nerves in the eyes and face are among the most commonly affected in people with diabetes who have damage to the cranial nerve. Based on this, they are designing studies to evaluate whether testing the blink reflex could provide diagnostic information about cranial nerve function.
