Diabetes Center Publishes Book on Diabetes Care for Healthcare
While many books on diabetes management are written for people who have the disease, the Joslin Diabetes Center has just published one with doctors in mind. "Joslin's Diabetes Deskbook: A Guide for Primary Care Providers"— written by Richard S. Beaser, MD, from Harvard Medical School, along with members of the Joslin staff—provides background information on diabetes and its complications as well as outlining the most current approaches to managing and treating the disease.
Topics covered in the book include diagnosis, oral medications, guidelines for designing insulin therapy programs (including pump therapy), techniques that can help to reduce complications, approaches to patient education, neuropathy, foot care, pregnancy and psychological issues.
Among the special features are 35 pages of medication summaries as well as checklists for developing a program of blood-glucose monitoring; for conducting a physical exam, getting a patient's medical history and assessing laboratory results; and for evaluating women with diabetes who are planning for pregnancy. The book also provides charts, tables and Joslin's clinical guidelines for adults with diabetes.
"Joslin's Diabetes Deskbook" costs $57.50 plus shipping. You can order a copy online at www.store.joslin.org or by calling Joslin at (800) 344-4501.
