Cases of Type 2 Diabetes in British Caucasian Youth
Doctors Warn That Problem May Be on the Rise
In a report published in the March 2002 issue of the Archives of Disease in Childhood, England records its first cases of type 2 diabetes among Caucasian adolescents. (Cases of type 2 diabetes among adolescents of other racial groups have already been reported.)
Three females and one male, ages 13 to 15, from the south and west regions of England were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the past two years, say researchers from Bristol and Southampton. In all cases, the development of diabetes was associated with obesity.
The researchers express concern about the rise of type 2 diabetes among children and adolescents in England stemming from the nation's growing problem of obesity. Diabetes "will become more prevalent given the epidemic of childhood obesity in this country," they write.
