Unless you have a severe foot deformity or do not receive close attention to foot care from your healthcare provider, you may not need to wear therapeutic shoes to reduce the risk of foot ulcers.
A two-year study of 400 subjects with diabetes and a history of foot ulcers showed that those who wore sturdy, well-fitting shoes did not have a significantly higher incidence of foot ulcers than those wearing therapeutic shoes with inserts. Ulcer episodes that did occur were found among subjects who had insensitive feet and wore either therapeutic shoes or nonsturdy shoes.
