A Sticky Situation—Lancet Reuse Can Lead to Amputations
If you base your lancet changes on the turning of the seasons, you might want to rethink your policy.
Two women with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes required partial finger amputations after reusing the same lancet for several weeks. This prompted doctors in Florence, Italy, to write a letter to the editor of the medical journal Diabetes Care, advising people with diabetes to use a new lancet for each test in addition to practicing careful hygiene.
Both women tested at least six times a week and had multiple complications. Treatment with several antibiotics failed to halt the infections, necessitating the amputations.
