Many People Who Have Heart Attacks Also Have Pre-Diabetes
People who have a heart attack but have not been previously diagnosed with diabetes should be checked for pre-diabetes—formerly called impaired glucose tolerance—or even diabetes itself.
Researchers in Sweden who checked the blood-glucose levels of 181 people admitted with heart attacks to the coronary care units of two hospitals found that 35 percent had pre-diabetes and an additional 31 percent had previously undiagnosed diabetes.
The researchers recommend that all people who suffer heart attacks should have fasting blood-glucose tests, A1Cs and oral glucose tolerance tests to determine high-risk individuals.
