Combination oral contraceptives may do more than prevent unwanted pregnancies—they also may help prevent diabetes.
In a multicenter U.S. study involving 1,940 young African-American and Caucasian women, researchers investigated the associations between use of the contraceptives and glucose levels, insulin levels and diabetes. The women ranged in age from 18 to 30 at the beginning of the 10-year study.
The women who took oral contraceptives had lower fasting blood glucose levels, higher levels of insulin and lower odds of diabetes compared with those who did not take oral contraceptives.
