Does contracting an enterovirus infection early in pregnancy lead to a higher risk of your child having type 1 diabetes? Not necessarily, say research-ers in Finland, which has the world's highest incidence of type 1 diabetes, according to statistics from the World Health Organization.
More than 1,600 women whose children had type 1 diabetes were tested for enterovirus antibodies, as were an equal number of mothers whose children did not have diabetes. The re-searchers conducted two series of tests.
In the first series, 3.1 percent of the women who had children with type 1 diabetes showed antibodies, compared to 4.1 percent of the women whose children did not develop diabetes.
In the second series of tests, 7.1 percent of the women whose children had type 1 diabetes displayed antibodies, compared to 5.3 percent of the women in the control group.
