Researchers are discussing yet another risk factor for diabetes-related complications: health literacy, defined as the measure of a person's "ability to read, comprehend and act on medical instructions."
Common among racial and ethnic minorities, elderly people and people with chronic conditions—particularly those who live in public housing—low health literacy contributes to higher A1Cs and to higher rates of retinopathy.
The researchers recommend a focus on efforts to develop and evaluate diabetes self-management, in order to improve outcomes among people who have inadequate health literacy.
