People With Diabetes More Prone to Acute Liver Failure
Add another complication to the list of diabetes-related diseases: acute liver failure.
Researchers who did a database search of the Department of Veterans Affairs medical records found a prevalence of 2.31 cases of acute liver failure per 10,000 person-years for people with diabetes, compared to 1.44 cases per 10,000 person-years for people who did not have diabetes. The risk remained significantly greater even after excluding people with liver disease, those with viral hepatitis and those who had acute liver failure recorded after treatment with Rezulin (troglitazone).
The researchers checked the medical records of 173,643 people with diabetes and 650,620 who did not have diabetes.
