Retinopathy Associated With Blood Pressure, Lipid Profile and BMI
Dutch researchers say retinopathy is associated with blood pressure levels, lipid concentrations, and body mass index (BMI).
A sample of 626 individuals underwent extensive measurements during 1989.1992, including an eye examination and two-field 45-degree fundus photography. Researchers assessed the occurrence of retinopathy among individuals with normal glucose metabolism (NGM) and impaired glucose metabolism (IGM) and individuals with newly diagnosed and known diabetes.
The prevalence of retinopathy was 9 percent in people with NGM, 11 percent in people with IGM, 13 percent in people with newly diagnosed diabetes, and 34 percent in people with known diabetes.
"The prevalence of retinopathy was positively associated with elevated blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol and triglyceride levels in all glucose categories," write the researchers.
