Cutting your carbs and increasing your protein intake? You could be damaging your kidneys, according to researchers who studied the effects of a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet on 10 people who did not have diabetes.
Participants ate their normal diet, followed by one severely restricted in carbohydrates for two weeks. That was followed by four weeks of eating a moderate-carbohydrate diet.
After six weeks of restricted carbohydrates coupled with increased protein intake, researchers found a marked increase in the acid load to the kidneys.
The diet studied "increases the risk for kidney stone formation, decreases estimated calcium balance, and may increase the risk for bone loss," say the researchers.
