For men over the age of 50, increasing duration of type 2 diabetes is positively associated with increased risk of erectile dysfunction (ED) when compared to men without diabetes.
In 2000, questionnaires were sent to 31,027 men ages 53 to 90. Respondents rated their ability over the past five years (without treatment) to have and maintain an erection sufficient for intercourse. Men who reported poor or very poor function were considered to have ED. Diabetes information was ascertained via self-report and documented with supplementary medical data.
According to researchers from the Department of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, men with diabetes had an age-adjusted relative risk 1.32 times that of men without diabetes for having ED. Men with type 1 diabetes averaged the highest risk of ED, three times that of men without diabetes.
