"Si Tiene Diabetes, Cuide Su Corazón" (If you have diabetes, take care of your heart) is a campaign launched in late July 2002 by the U.S. National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) to call attention to the fact that Hispanic and Latino Americans with diabetes are at higher risk for heart disease.
To complement the program, a bilingual recipe booklet and printed information about diabetes are available.
"At least 65 percent of people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke, and yet only one in four Hispanic and Latino Americans with diabetes know they are at risk for heart disease," according to Yanira Cruz Gonzales, director of the Center for Health Promotion at the National Council of La Raza and chair of the NDEP's Hispanic/Latino Work Group. "If people know what to do and take care of their hearts, they can remain the heart of their families for a long time."
Gonzales made her comments in a news release from the National Institutes of Health.
The NDEP suggests the following target numbers for most adults to manage their diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol:
A recipe booklet offering new twists on Hispanic and Latino recipes, along with additional information on diabetes in Spanish and in English, is available free by calling the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse at (800) 438-5383.
The National Council of La Raza annually serves more than 3 million Hispanics of all nationality groups in all regions of the country. It can be reached by calling (202) 785-1670 or by logging on to www.nclr.org.
