The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to take the Chinese weight loss products Chaso (Jianfei) Diet Capsules and Chaso Genpi. The FDA reports that several people in Japan have become ill, and some have died, after taking the diet products.
The Chinese weight loss products, which the FDA notes are often sold in small urban markets in the United States as alternatives to Western medicine, may contain active drug ingredients such as fenfluramine. Fenfluramine and another diet drug, phentermine, were used in conjunction for weight loss until it was discovered that the combination led to a potentially fatal heart disease, according to an FDA news release.
FDA import operations personnel are on the alert for the two substances, and the public is urged to contact their local FDA office if the products are found in their area.
