While including refined grains in your diet does not increase the risk of getting type 2 diabetes, eating more whole grains can lower your risk by up to 42 percent—even if you have other markers for type 2 diabetes, including family history and a low level of physical activity.
The research is based on a study of more than 42,000 male health professionals that has been ongoing since 1986.
