Grassroots Diabetes Programs for Latinos Receive Support
In an effort to help fight the diabetes epidemic among the Latino population in the United States, organizations in four states have received $10,000 each from the Aventis Adelante! Diabetes Community Excellence Awards. The Spanish word "adelante" means "to preserve" or "to move forward."
These awards were designed to recognize initiatives that move beyond education and involve the community in motivating diabetes control and treatment among Latinos, who contract diabetes and related complications at twice the rate of Caucasians of similar ages.
The four award recipients, chosen from more than 2,400 organizations that submitted proposals, were Goshen Medical Center of Faison, North Carolina; Inland Northwest Health Services of Othello, Washington; Kaweah Delta Hospital, Tulare County, California; and St. Johns Riverside Hospital/Healthy Yonkers Initiative of Yonkers, New York. One of the four will receive an additional $5,000 in 2003, based on its effectiveness.
The awards are granted through the Latino Influencer Network (LIN), a partnership of Latino health and diabetes experts. LIN was established by Aventis, the maker of Lantus.
