Bush Signs Legislation Allocating $1.5 Billion for Diabetes
On December 17, 2002, President George W. Bush signed into law H.R. 5738—a $1.5 billion bill that will substantially increase and extend funding for the Special Diabetes Program.
The legislation, according to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), provides $750 million for juvenile diabetes research and $750 million for diabetes treatment and prevention programs for Native American populations over a period of five years.
"This amount represents the largest amount of funding ever achieved by JDRF Government Relations for juvenile diabetes research," wrote the JDRF in a news release issued the day of the signing, "and is the result of a year-long advocacy effort by the Foundation."
The funding will allow the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to expand its juvenile diabetes research program. The budget for this program will grow to approximately $330 million annually by fiscal year 2004, "a much higher level" than the $134 million spent in fiscal year 2000.
