A recent study by French researchers demonstrated that taking an injection of Humalog (insulin lispro) before lunch can lower dinnertime blood-glucose levels in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Boys in particular also saw improved overall blood-glucose control after adding the lunchtime Humalog.
Researchers randomly assigned 16 boys and 27 girls with an average age of 12.4 years to one of two groups: the first added an injection of Humalog at lunchtime and the second did not. Both groups ate identical meals for two months.
For those who took the lunchtime Humalog injection, the number of days on which their before-dinner blood glucose was greater than 180 was reduced by half, compared to those who omitted the injection. A1Cs also decreased slightly overall and were lowered significantly for boys who took the lunchtime injection, compared to boys who did not. The study found no significant difference in frequency of hypoglycemia or weight change between the two groups.
While the researchers report that the children were satisfied with the improved blood-glucose control, the number who continued to follow the protocol decreased during the subsequent six months.
