Finally! A Guide For BG Tesing in Type 2s!
One of the largest physician organizations in the country has developed a new guide for self-testing of blood glucose levels.
The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) says the guidelines apply to everybody with diabetes. However, they stress they are particularly important to non-insulin-taking type 2s who are treated with oral medications.
According to the new AAFP guidelines:
- If you have type 1 diabetes and are taking insulin, test three or four times a day.
- If you have type 2 diabetes and are taking insulin and diabetes pills, test three or four times a day.
- If you are taking only oral medications for diabetes and have not yet achieved your target A1C, test two to four times a day.
- If you are taking only oral medications for diabetes, or if you are controlling your diabetes well with diet and exercise only, ask your doctor how often you should test.
The new guide is being mailed by the AAFP to its membership of more than 94,000 family doctors who treat nearly 80 percent of people with diabetes in this country.
