Newly Diagnosed and Established Diabetics at Risk
Both Groups Show Increase in Subclinical Atherosclerosis.
A Swedish study showed that there is an increase in preclinical atherosclerotic changes and increased inflammation in men with newly diagnosed diabetes as well as in men with established diabetes, when compared with healthy control subjects.
Sixty-one-year-old Caucasian men with either established diabetes or newly diagnosed diabetes, along with healthy control subjects, were measured for standard risk factors and C-reactive protein levels to evaluate for inflammatory conditions. Measurements of the carotid artery and plaque status were also assessed by ultrasound.
The resulting IMT (intima-media thickness) composite scores showed increased preclinical atherosclerotic changes and increased inflammation as assessed by the C-reactive protein levels in men with newly diagnosed diabetes, as well as in patients with established diabetes when compared to healthy control subjects.
