Do you remember “American Bandstand”?

Week after week, for more than 30 years, Dick Clark introduced us to the latest rock and roll artists who would make us get up of the sofa and dance.

Clark recently announced he has been living with type 2 diabetes for over 10 years. It wasn’t until he better understood the link between diabetes and health complications that he decided to get proactive about taking care of his condition while educating others. (Coincidentally, dancing or even a walking program may help send type 2 into remission or at least help control blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels!)

Where Are All the Good’ Research Ideas?

We have all heard the mantra, “Give us more money, and we can cure this disease.”

But is it possible that the real problem is there are “not enough good ideas”?

I recently had a chance to speak with George King, MD, the research director at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston (see page 62). King bemoaned the fact that in diabetes research today, there is a lack of “good” research ideas.

The Diabetes Health staff just returned from the ADA Scientific Sessions in Orlando, Florida, and once again we were inundated with pharmaceutical company-sponsored research. That’s why every year after attending the Scientific Sessions we present our Research Extravaganza (coming in our September issue). It’s an opportunity for Diabetes Health to showcase research being done by the “little guys.” Our aim is to discover those researchers doing really interesting or, as George King puts it, “good” studies.

Do You Love Your Meter?

I certainly do.

I’ve carried it with me everywhere for the past 20 years. I’ve gone through many meters in that time, but there has always been one at my side.

Our Meter News columnist Rick Mendosa prepared a list of 10 reasons why you should love your meter (page 50). Also, check out our “Complete Meter Reference Guide” starting on page 52.

A New Cult Classic?

Did you read the first chapter of “The Canal Murder” last month?

The author’s goal was to write a gripping novel whose protagonist has diabetes, and she has succeeded. I’m already on the edge of my seat and looking forward to the next chapter. I think that several months down the line, as we near the climax, this feature could be a cult classic like “American Idol” or “Twin Peaks.” Readers will be talking about it and asking, “What do you think will happen next?”

Another Great New Column, and More

With this issue, we also welcome nationally renowned endocrinologist Steven Edelman, MD, FACE, as a columnist.
