I can still hear the voices and see the faces of people telling me, when I was younger, that having diabetes would keep me from doing this or keep me from doing that.
I can even remember believing them.
Have you ever been told the same thing?
Well, it’s not true. And if you need any proof that it isn’t, look no further than the man on the cover of this month’s magazine.
Gary Hall, Jr., is one of America’s top freestyle sprint swimmers. Gary was diagnosed with type 1 in March 1999-some three years after his gold medal glory at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon diagnosis, Gary’s doctor told him, point blank, “It’s the end of your swimming career.”
Four years, two Olympics and several gold medals later, Gary is still considered America’s finest freestyle sprint swimmer. We are delighted that Diabetes Health had the opportunity to talk with him shortly before he left for Athens. See our interview with Gary Hall, Jr..
New Section on Supplements
Do you take supplements to help control your diabetes?
I do.
And there have been many studies that say they work.
Diabetes Health will be profiling a Supplement of the Month as part of our Food for Thought section, explaining how the supplement may help with diabetes control and offering dosage recommendations and any precautions. Our first story provides a research summary of a number of supplements you’ll want to know more about.
An Insider’s View of the Glycemic Index
I have always been fascinated by the glycemic index. Over the years, in the pages of this magazine, we have given it a lot of coverage.
Johanna Burani, MS, RD, CDE, an expert and author on the glycemic index, gives us our most in-depth coverage of the topic to date. Be sure to check out her article.
Don’t Miss Our Research Extravaganza
We offer our annual overview of research from the ADA Scientific Sessions, which were held this past June in Orlando, Florida.
Check it out! How many other diabetes magazines cover research on how camel’s milk may prevent type 1?
Here Comes Autumn
As the days get cooler and the nights longer in the next few months, be sure to button up your overcoat, take the earmuffs out of the attic and always carry your diabetes supplies—including fast-acting glucose—wherever you go.
Have a great September!
