What is the difference between fat body mass and lean body mass?
Fat body mass refers to the fat stores in the body. Excess body fat, especially visceral fat in the abdominal area, has been associated with increased risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, as well as morbidity.
Lean body mass refers to the body’s lean tissue such as muscle. Lean tissue is denser than fat tissue. The amount of lean tissue affects your metabolic rate—the rate at which you burn calories.
What is a healthy body fat range?
Healthy body fat ranges, according to the Mayo Clinic, are 18 to 23 percent for men and 25 to 30 percent for women.
What are some easy-to-access sources of CLA?
Conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) are primarily found in red meat (especially in grass-fed beef), in dairy products including cheese and in poultry, in corn oil or as a supplement.
Studies on the use of CLAs are complex and controversial. CLA is thought to help reduce abdominal fat deposits and enhance muscle growth. Typically, a loss of body fat without a loss of weight is noted.
CLA is also thought to be a powerful antioxidant. It may be beneficial in preventing some cancer risks and may function as an immune-system enhancer.
Consuming a wide range of foods and eating whole foods rather than processed ones can help ensure the intake of a variety of nutrients in one’s diet.
