Stiffness Associated With Coronary Artery Calcification
Stiffness and impaired blood flow in the arteries of the lower legs may help identify diabetic patients with possible coronary artery disease.
Japanese researchers observed 102 asymptomatic type 2 diabetic patients with no history of cardiovascular complications. Coronary artery calcium (CAC) score was used as a marker.
Patients with the highest CAC scores, which indicate possible coronary artery disease, showed the highest brachial-ankle PWV and resistive index and the lowest total flow volume. Both brachial-ankle PWV and resistive index were positively correlated and total flow was negatively correlated with the CAC score.
