The Link Between Muscle Atrophy and Neuropathy
A Danish study shows that the atrophy of foot muscles is closely linked to diabetic neuropathy.
Magnetic resonance images of the foot were observed in 23 long-term diabetic patients, 15 with and eight without chronic neuropathy. Images were also taken in 23 healthy nondiabetic control subjects. A neuropathy rank-sum score was calculated for each patient.
Total volume of the foot muscles was halved in neuropathic patients when compared to scores of nonneuropathic and healthy patients.
Atrophy of foot muscles is closely related to the severity of neuropathy and reflects motor dysfunction.
