Patients with type 2 diabetes
Low-fat, high-fiber diets promoted weight loss in patients with type 2 diabetes without causing unfavorable alterations in plasma lipids or blood glucose control.
That was the finding of researchers at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon.
Eleven patients with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to receive a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet or a diet high in monounsaturated fat for six weeks. Both diets offered self-selection of food quantity.
With both diets, plasma total, LDL-, and HDL-cholesterol concentrations tended to decrease. Body weight decreased significantly (an average of 3.37 pounds) for those following the low-fat diet.
Triglycerides, blood glucose control and insulin sensitivity did not differ significantly between the two diets.
