Taken with a low- or modified-fat diet, Australian researchers say that 30 grams of walnuts per day improve the lipid profile of patients with type 2.
In a randomized controlled trial, 58 men and women, average age 59 years, followed either a low-fat, modified low-fat or a modified low-fat that consumed 30 grams of walnuts per day. (Thirty grams is approximately one ounce of walnuts, or about 14 walnut halves.)
“The walnut group achieved a significantly greater increase in HDL cholesterol-to-total cholesterol ratio and HDL than the two other treatment groups,” say the researchers. “A 10 percent reduction in LDL cholesterol was also achieved in the walnut group.”
There were no significant differences between groups for changes in body weight, percentage of body fat, total antioxidant capacity or A1C levels.
