Alcohol and the Metabolic Syndrome

Mild to moderate consumption of alcohol is inversely and significantly associated with the following components of the metabolic syndrome: Low HDL (good) cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, high waist circumference and high blood insulin levels, say Boston researchers.

Data from 8,125 participants from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were evaluated for the metabolic syndrome using the National Cholesterol Education Program criteria, fasting insulin levels and alcohol consumption.

White male and female participants and those who drank beer and wine showed the greatest favorable effect from mild to moderate alcohol consumption.
