Dbaza Software Makes Diabetes Management Fun

Being the parent of a child with type 1, I was anxious to evaluate Diabetes Education for Kids by Dbaza, Inc. This software explains the different elements of diabetes and shows the child how to manage them.

A new user begins by creating a cartoon-like character that will guide them through the five interactive chapters presented in the software. The character—which reminded me of Casper the Friendly Ghost—helps maintain the child’s attention along the way.

Reinforces Learning, Accomodates Knowledge Levels

The chapters cover blood glucose monitoring, insulin injections, meal planning (and how food affects blood glucose control) and exercise, and they also explain how all of these areas work together. Each chapter’s instruction is followed by practice sessions that help reinforce the material the child just learned.

The software accommodates different knowledge levels. If the child already knows the information covered in a particular section, it can be skipped. Users also can go directly to a particular topic area in which they need further instruction; parents and diabetes educators can suggest specific areas for the child to review.

Quizzes Let You Test Your Knowledge

The software can be stopped at any time, and when it is restarted, it will begin where the user left off. There are quizzes to test the user’s knowledge, and the program keeps track of the number of correct and incorrect answers, which can be printed out for a later review. The software also includes a comprehensive dictionary of diabetes-related terms.

Diabetes Education for Kid’s best feature is its interactive capability, which allows the user to become part of the story. The program lets children build on their understanding as they learn more about diabetes management.

It’s Not Pump Friendly

The only drawback to this software is that it does not cover the use of insulin pumps. With more and more doctors prescribing pumps, it would be useful if a future version addressed insulin pumps. Other than this small oversight, Diabetes Education for Kids is an outstanding program, which has received a Favorably Reviewed Status from the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
