Self-Care Is More Difficult
Chronic pain is a major limiting factor in the performance of self-care behaviors that help minimize diabetes-related complications. Chronic pain should be considered when developing effective diabetes self-care regimens.
Department of Veterans Affairs data on 993 patients with diabetes who had chronic pain were studied. The association between the presence and severity of chronic pain and difficulty with diabetes self-management was evaluated by Michigan researchers.
Approximately 60 percent of respondents reported chronic pain. Patients with chronic pain had poorer diabetes self-management and greater difficulty following a recommended exercise plan and eating plan. Individuals with severe or very severe pain, compared with mild or moderate, reported significantly poorer diabetes self-management, including greater difficulty with taking diabetes medications and exercise.
