From Dana Diabecare USA
This month we take a look at the Dana Magic Bolus Calculator from Dana Diabecare USA. These are the folks who make the Dana Diabecare II insulin pump.
Because this pump does not contain the built-in bolus “wizards” or calculators like some of the other pumps on the market, Dana has created the Magic Bolus Calculator software to run on a Palm Pilot or Pocket PC. It is designed for insulin pump users who want a tool for computing their bolus, or for any person with insulin-treated diabetes who is trying to match insulin doses to carbohydrates.
So How Does It Work?
Dana Magic uses the same information that you use for computing bolus amounts. You personalize the software with your target blood glucose range, your high-glucose correction factor, your total daily dose and your insulin-to-carbohydrate ratio, and the software performs its “magic” for you.
To calculate a bolus for a meal or snack, enter your current blood glucose reading, and then enter the number of carbohydrates in your meal. Dana Magic will do the calculation for you and present you with the bolus quantity. If you do not know the number of carbohydrates for your food, Dana Magic has a built-in food database. The database is categorized so that you can find a particular type of food quickly.
Helps With Highs
If you are suffering from a high blood glucose level, Dana Magic can help. Simply enter the blood glucose level into the software, and it will calculate the correction bolus for you. Dana Magic also will add a correction factor when you are eating a meal and currently have high blood glucose.
And Lows?
Dana Magic has an option to help calculate the number of glucose tablets you will need to take to raise your blood glucose level to your target range.
Software Cost
The Dana Magic Bolus Calculator costs $35. It can be downloaded from the Dana Web site by logging on to http://theinsulinpump.com.

Q. Will the Dana Magic Bolus Calculator run on a Macintosh or a Windows personal computer?
A. No.
Q. Would this program be useful to insulin-treated diabetics who do not use an insulin pump?
A. Yes. Dana Magic can be used by anyone who is trying to match insulin doses to carbohydrates.
Dana Diabecare offers versions of the Magic Bolus Calculator that are compatible with the following systems:
