Most of the products reviewed in this column over the past few months have come from glucose meter and insulin pump manufacturers and from independent software companies. This month, we will take a look at an offering from one of the major insulin manufacturers: Keeping Well With Diabetes, a Web-based product from Novo Nordisk.
The Web site is divided into several areas of interest: Education, Newsletter, Tools and NovoTrack.
The Education area contains information on nutrition, exercise, complications, medication and other topics regarding diabetes and living with it.
Newsletters will feature the latest newsletter from Novo Nordisk. Topics discussed include Medicaid and diabetes, recipes, reports on new types of treatments and much more. You may also look through the archives of past newsletters.
For Tools, you must first register to be able to fully use its functionality. Registration is simple and takes only a few minutes. Once you are registered, you can use the Blood Glucose Diary to keep track of your blood glucose levels and identify any trends that may indicate a need for change in your diabetes care regimen. You may configure your target blood glucose levels for mealtimes, two hours after meals and at bedtime. As you enter your blood glucose data, you can specify whether it is before a meal or after a meal.
Tools contains many other features, one of which is the Menu Planner. It helps you to plan personalized seven-day menus. The planner will calculate single- or family-sized recipes.
The Food Exchange List accompanies the Menu Planner. It can be used to help you to follow your meal plan, and it also gives you the information you need to substitute one food for another while still meeting your calorie and carbohydrate goals.
Another feature in the Tools area is MediReminder, which helps you follow your prescribed treatment plan by reminding you when it is time to refill your medication. Based on information that you supply, it will send you an e-mail reminder when it is time to refill one or all of your medications. You control the reminder frequency and customize the medication information.
NovoTrack, is a self-paced, personalized home education and support program designed for people living with diabetes. It was developed to help you keep on track with your diabetes management and is customized specifically for your needs, based on the answers you give when you register.
NovoTrack offers a combination of features, from the comprehensive educational Guide to Good Care to the informative Personal Scorecard. It tries to give you insight to help you be a better partner with your diabetes care team and help you make decisions that are right for you. NovoTrack will let you keep a record of your diabetes goals, testing, A1C tests, kidney tests, cholesterol, weight, foot and eye health and more.
What does Keeping Well With Diabetes cost? Good news—it’s free! But you do have to register to use the personalized features of NovoTrack and the Blood Glucose Diary.
