Eating peanuts and peanut products is a good dietary decision, according to Penn State University researchers.
In a national study, a sample of 4,751 men, 4,572 women, and 4,939 children were evaluated for two days using food intake records to analyze differences in terms of energy and nutrient intakes between people who eat peanuts and people who don’t.
“Peanut users, 24 percent of those surveyed, had higher intakes of protein, total fat, polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin E, folate, calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron,” write the researchers. “Dietary cholesterol of peanut users was lower for all population groups.”
Despite caloric intake being “significantly higher” in all population groups of people who ate peanuts, the average BMI was lower for all gender and age categories.
