Reducing Food Intake With Dentistry
Louisiana researchers say that controlling the size of your food bites significantly reduces food and caloric intake.
A new patented dental approach, known as the DDS system, is a removable tool that is inserted into the upper palate of the mouth, like a retainer. This reduces the size of the oral cavity, which, in turn, reduces bite size.
Thirty-two adults between the ages of 18 to 65 with a body mass index ranging from 27 and 40 were randomized to a study. On Day 1, participants ate all their meals and stayed between meals at a research center. On Day 2, experimental participants utilized the DDS system during meals.
Results showed that the experimental group ate an average of 659 fewer calories per day compared to the day 1 control group, which ate an average of 126 fewer calories per day.
The reduction in food intake was not associated with changes in ratings of hunger or satiety in this short study. Longer-term, larger studies are needed to validate the usefulness of this tool in obesity management.
