Further Hope for Implants

In January 2005, the first implant of stem cells into the pancreas through a small artery was performed on a diabetic patient.

The Team of Interventional Cardiologists of Clinic San Nicolás of San Nicolás’ City in Buenos Aires, Argentina, carried out this procedure. Drs. Roberto Fernández Vina, Oberdan Andrin and Francisco Vrsalovic led the surgery.

The surgery selectively implanted stem cells in the pancreas, with the hopes of regenerating this area of the organ and of promoting insulin production in the patient.

Stems cells have never previously been implanted in the pancreas in direct form through an artery, state the researchers.
