Yogurt Promotes Loss of Central Obesity
Eating yogurt in place of other foods can be a boon to weight loss, conclude Tennessee researchers who designed a study to compare potential antiobesity benefits from increased dietary calcium compared to other calcium sources.
Obese participants were given either 400 to 500 mg daily of a calcium supplement (control group) or 1,100 mg daily of dietary calcium contained in yogurt for 12 weeks. The yogurt replaced an equal number of calories removed from the daily diet. The subjects in both study groups were placed on a daily diet decreased by 500 calories to promote weight loss. Body weight, body fat and fat distribution, blood pressure and circulating lipids were measured at baseline and after 12 weeks of intervention.
Fat loss was significantly increased on the yogurt diet when compared to the control group (9.7 pounds versus 6.1 pounds, respectively). Central body fat loss was augmented by 81 percent on the yogurt diet, resulting in a significant reduction in waist circumference.
