Improving the health of your teeth and gums can also improve your diabetes control

Improving the health of your teeth and gums can also improve your diabetes control, according to Turkish researchers.

“The results of our study showed that nonsurgical periodontal treatment is associated with improved [blood glucose] control in type 2 patients and could be undertaken along with the standard measures for the diabetic patient care,” write the researchers, who studied 44 people with type 2 diabetes.

Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: a treatment group that received full-mouth scaling and root planing and a control group that received no periodontal treatment.

For the treatment groups, “A statistically significant effect could be demonstrated for plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth and bleeding on probing,“ write the researchers.“ A1C levels in the treatment group decreased significantly, whereas the control group showed a slight but insignificant increase for this parameter.”
