Free Software Works With Meter and Pump

Medtronic CareLink Therapy Management System for Diabetes

| Oct 1, 2005

This month, we take a look at the Medtronic CareLink Therapy Management System for Diabetes. This is an online diabetes management program from the folks who make the Medtronic MiniMed insulin pumps.

To access the CareLink system, go to www.minimed.com and put your cursor over the selection called Products. When the list of selections appears under Products, choose Therapy Management Software.

The main screen in CareLink contains four tabs that organize the available tasks. Those tasks are Home, Upload, Logbook and Reports. The Home tab will return you to the main screen in CareLink.

CareLink has the ability to upload data from either your glucose meter or insulin pump. To start an upload, you need to click on the tab called Upload. This will take you to an area that will allow you to choose to download either your glucose meter or insulin pump. To download data, you will need a Java Plug-in for your Web browser. If needed, CareLink will install it for you. You will also need any data cables or infrared ports for downloading your meter or insulin pump.

The Logbook tab takes you to an area that lets you record data in your computerized logbook. You can record information about carbohydrates, exercise, your A1C test and infusion-set changes. CareLink will let you attach comments for each entry in the logbook.

The Reports tab allows you to create and view several types of reports. The Quick View Summary shows graphical summaries for glucose and insulin along with statistical information and logbook data in tables for a two-week period. The Daily Summary shows glucose readings, insulin delivered by the pump, important pump changes and carbohydrate and exercise entries recorded in the logbook for the day selected. The Trends Summary shows summaries of glucose, insulin and carbohydrates by one-, two-, four- or six-day averages. There are also Modal reports, a report to show all collected data, a logbook style report and a pump settings report.

CareLink offers an impressive online help system. If you click on Help, it takes you to that area, which is divided into categories you can choose from. Some screens also contain a question-mark icon; when you click on the icon, a quick help window pops up. The help system also gives you access to the comprehensive 109-page User Guide.

So how much does CareLink cost? That’s the best part: It’s free! For additional information, go to www.minimed.com, or call Medtronic MiniMed at (800) 826-2099.
