Breastfeeding Called a Protector Against Getting Type 1

Czech research

Czech researchers say that not breastfeeding a child may increase its chances of developing type 1 diabetes.

Researchers observed a group of 868 diabetic children and 1,466 anonymous controls whom the researchers say were mostly schoolmates of the children with type 1. The data were collected from structured questionnaires that had been completed by the children’s parents.

“The risk of [type 1] decreased with increasing duration of breastfeeding, while not breastfeeding was associated with an increased [type 1] risk,” write the researchers.
