Jay Leeuwenburg
For nine years, Jay Leeuwenburg was a star offensive lineman in the National Football League. He is now the subject of “Yes I Can! Yes You Can! Tackle Diabetes and Win” (ComServ Books, 2005).
Co-written by Leeuwenburg with Denny Dressman of the Rocky Mountain News, the book delivers a message of encouragement and hope to families dealing with juvenile diabetes. In addition to sharing Leeuwenburg’s personal challenges with type 1 diabetes, “Yes I Can! Yes You Can!” provides an entertaining account of his life as a college and professional football player.
Leeuwenburg was diagnosed with type 1 at the age of 12. While attending the University of Colorado, he was voted All-American and played in back-to-back national championship games against Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl. Between 1992 and 2000 he played for the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins. While playing, Leeuwenburg spoke to children and parents at hundreds of educational programs, provided tickets to NFL games for thousands of children with diabetes and their families and produced a life-sized poster with motivational and educational information about his own diabetes management and football career.
Today, Leeuwenburg lives in Colorado with his family and teaches third grade at the Colorado Academy.
“Yes I Can! Yes You Can! Tackle Diabetes and Win” sells for approximately $16.95 and is available from the Web site www.yesicanyesyoucan.com.
