Teeth are an Indication of Diabetes Complications in Type 1s

| Feb 1, 2007

Kuwaiti researchers say that periodontal disease severity is associated with both diabetes duration and the presence of diabetes complications in people with type 1.

Twenty-nine patients with type 1 of less than five years duration were compared with 43 patients with greater than five years of diabetes duration.

“The number of missing teeth … was significantly higher in patients with longer diabetes duration,” write the researchers. “For patients with [greater than] five years diabetes duration, periodontal disease severity was also greater in patients with one or more diabetes complications, as assessed by the number of missing teeth.”
