Caffeinated coffee offers a “protective effect” against developing diabetes, according to research presented at the University of California, San Diego, in La Jolla, California.
A total of 910 nondiabetic adults who were an average age of 50 at the start of the study were followed between 1984 and 1996. Coffee intake was measured in this time frame.
“Past and current coffee drinkers had a reduced risk of incident diabetes compared with those who never drank coffee,” write the researchers. “The 317 participants with baseline impaired glucose who were past or current coffee drinkers were also at reduced risk for incident diabetes.”
