Diabetes camp isn’t just for kids anymore. For type 1 athletes who want expert coaching on how to fit diabetes management into intense physical training, Stroke, Spin, and Stride’s week-long summer camp for grown-ups fits the bill. Says camp founder Matthew Corcoran, M.D, “We’ve hand-chosen our team of coaches and medical staff, and we’ve designed our programs to foster highly individualized attention.”
The personalized training ranges from the basics up to the highest levels of athletic performance, depending upon the needs of each camper. Throughout the week, campers can choose from clinics taught by elite athletes and professionals with impressive credentials. Clinic topics include diabetes, hydration, nutrition, exercise-induced hyper and hypoglycemia, goal setting, sports psychology, general fitness, swimming, cycling, and running.
Personalized physiological testing identifies each camper’s optimum training zones and monitors training. At the week’s end, the athletes participate in a mini-triathlon to practice what they’ve learned. The competition cements the friendships that many say are the high point of the camp.
Two week-long camps are offered, from June 17 to 23 and June 24 to 30, at the Rodale Aquatic Center in Lehigh Valley. The $1,500 fee includes everything but airfare to the camp.
