No End in Sight to Shortage of Endos
There are only about 5,000 practicing endocrinologists in the United States in this time of rampant type 2 diabetes, and most of those are on the coasts. According to Dr. Hossein Gharib, past president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Midwest could use at least 5,000 more endos, but the specialty just isn’t attracting enough new physicians.
It has few procedures, which are what bring in the dough under the current system of reimbursement. The time, work, and insight required to treat each patient just doesn’t pay as well as doing operations. Because of the paperwork hassles and sinking reimbursement, older endos are leaving the field and fewer new doctors are choosing to replace them.
